Transition lenses, also known as photochromatic lenses, change from clear indoors to a sun lens outside. Many of our patients enjoy the convenience of wearing one pair of glasses for indoors and outdoors.
How do Transition Lenses Work?
Transition lenses are treated with a polymer film that contains microscopic molecules that are UV sensitive; these special molecules' photochromatic properties cause them to darken when exposed to UV light. Once the UV light source is removed, for example, when the wearer goes inside, the lenses revert back to their clear state.
The transition begins to take place as soon as the UV exposure begins or ends; the transition is noticably underway after about two minutes and mostly complete within five minutes, although minor darkening/lightening will continue for up to fifteen minutes.
Who Needs Transitions?
Teachers, sales people and anyone who frequently goes in and out will enjoy the benefits of transitions.
