OPTOMETRISTS - are Doctors of Optometry (ODs) who examine and treat disorders of the eye as well as identify related systemic conditions affecting the visual system. They can prescribe medications, low vision rehabilitation, vision therapy, spectacle lenses and perform certain surgical procedures.
An optometrist has completed pre-professional undergraduate education in a college or university and four additional years of pre-professional undergraduate education leading to a doctor of optometry degree (O.D.).
OPHTHALMOLOGISTS - are medical doctors (MDs) who specialize in diseases and conditions of the eye. They primarily perform surgery and treat medical conditions affecting the visual system, as well as prescribe eyeglasses and contact lenses. Ophthalmologists have attended medical school and have gone on to specialize in ophthalmology. Many have completed further education in a specific area such as glaucoma or retinal diseases.
OPTICIANS - are not doctors but eye care professionals who adjust and repair glasses, are knowledgeable about frame fitting and different types of spectacle lenses, and instruct patients in contact lens use. Opticians can also grind and assemble spectacles from the prescriptions provided by an Optometrist or Ophthalmologist.
